Do you get tired of working in the same place every day? Each day you stare at the same four walls of your cubicle and complain about your day with the same co-workers. How do you continue doing that?
The audit and consulting side of public accounting provides opportunities to work in different locations all the time. With my clientele, my team and I rarely work in the same location for more than five days at a time.
We experience diversity in our life naturally through where we work. Not only do we get to work in different locations, we work with different people. Our clients are different but we also work with different co-workers.
It keeps things fresh. It keeps things interesting. We get the opportunity to learn about people and business practices that we would not get if we worked in a static environment.
There are positives to working in the same place every day. I understand your commute will be consistent (as much as traffic allows anyway). You probably don’t have to carry a lot with you from day-to-day because it’s all in your cubicle.
Those are really the only two positives I see to working in the same place every day. There may be more. Let me know if there are.
I’ve been asked several times throughout my career if I would leave public accounting and take a CFO position in industry. I don’t think I could do it. Besides loving public accounting, I think I would get bored. As I told someone the other day, the first six months or so in any new job would be challenging and exciting. However, after a routine set in, I’d be bored. I’d want some diversity in location, practice and people.
The public accounting profession provides me the opportunity to experience that diversity. Each day is different. Each day brings new challenges.
Not working in the same place every day is the fourth reason why I love public accounting as a career. Start here for reason number 12 and work your way back to here. The final three reasons will be coming soon.
Now it’s your turn. Tell me why you enjoy your work environment, whether it is in the same location or whether you move around like me. If you have experiences or tips to improve your diversity in the workplace, share those as well.
