Public accounting provides many opportunities to travel to different and exciting areas of the country. Traveling, and the associated hotel stays, can be relaxing and enjoyable. Those hotel stays, though, can sometimes be quite annoying.
Typically, I stick with the Hilton family of hotels because the hotels in its portfolio are consistent with their cleanliness, reliability and quality. They are not all perfect but are above average in my experience. Some of the other hotel brands, though, are not as reliable.
The following are four of the most frequent hotel annoyances I experience.
Why do most hotel sinks not hold water? It may not be much of an issue for woman but for men, the sink not holding water is very annoying for the morning shaving routine. I’m not an all out environmentalist but it kills me to have to leave the water running the entire time I’m shaving.
Since I wear a suit and tie every day, I need to iron my dress shirts in the hotel. Three things annoy me about ironing in a hotel:
1. Hotel ironing boards squeal when set up. I know the ironing board will be very loud when I get it out so I make sure to iron early in the evening so I don’t annoy the people in the neighboring rooms. A little oil could do wonders for the noise.
2. More than one shirt has been ruined because of the stains caused by the iron. Hotel irons seem to always have rust or gunk that will stain a shirt. I’ve started bringing an extra shirt per week just in case one gets ruined.
3. Hotel ironing board covers have one of two annoying traits. They are either so thin that the holes from the ironing board itself show on the shirt being ironed or they are so wrinkled that it’s impossible to have a nicely ironed shirt.
Many people are paranoid about hotel bed comforters being dirty and full of germs. I’ve never experienced a nasty hotel bed comforter so that doesn’t bother me. However, many hotel bed sheets are not fitted. After one night of sleep, the bottom sheet (which should be fitted) no longer stays on the bed.
It’s my practice to not have housekeeping clean my room. In the rare instances I need additional towels or other items, I’ll request it directly from the front desk. Therefore, I always put the “Do Not Disturb” hangar on the door. If that is on the door, why then do some hotel housekeepers still come into my room? How annoying. I hung it there for a reason.
I’ve also been in hotels that do not have “Do Not Disturb” hangars for the door. What’s up with that?
There are other things that probably annoy you when staying in a hotel. What are they? Other things have annoyed me as well but the sink, irons, beds and housekeeping are the most consistent in regards to being annoying.
Besides those four hotel annoyances, I typically enjoy my hotel stays. Do you?
