Two or more people can be placed together on a formal team but that doesn’t mean they will act like a team. Several things must happen for people to operate as a team. Team building activities are some of those things.
A man and woman date, potentially for years, before getting married and forming a team. A pitcher and catcher work together for hours so they know what to expect from the other member of the team.
Good teams take work. What kind of work? Team building. Quality team building activities will enhance the chance for success. Let’s look at a couple of examples of team building activities.
Examples of Team Building Activities
1. Role play – Very few people like to role play but it is becoming more popular by the day. Role playing can now be seen in an office setting, on a sports team or in school. One or more people will act out a situation as they would like for it to occur. Role play will have its best result if there is a “devil’s advocate” in the group. This person will ask the difficult questions or make the activity uncomfortable so the real situation will be easier.
2. Trust fall – In the “Willie Stay or Willie Go” episode of Duck Dynasty, Willie plans a team building retreat for his key employees. The first activity at the retreat was called a Trust Fall. This activity is when a person falls blindly backwards into the arms of his teammates trusting they will catch him. If you trust the others on your team, the activity is a cinch. But, if you don’t trust your teammates, you won’t allow yourself to fall.
3. Build something – Put people into a number of even teams. Each team gets the same materials to build a particular object such as a cardboard boat or a small model race car. The teams have to decide how to design and build the object. Not only is there discussion and compromise, there is also a time limit. Therefore, true leaders will arise.
4. Seminars and conferences – Small teams should attend seminars together for a particular subject. It doesn’t necessarily have to be about teamwork. I’ve attended marriage seminars/retreats with my wife so we can become an even better team. Corporate teams can do the same thing.
These are just a few examples of team building activities. What other ideas do you have for team building activities? There are bound to be hundreds, if not thousands, of activities teams can do to enhance their success.
