Work Harder, Not _______

Work Harder
Does it take smarts or hard work to reach the stars.

Do you remember the Disney cartoon, DuckTales? I’d watch it when I got home from school when I was in elementary school. I remember one episode when Uncle Scrooge told a story about when he was a young duckling in Scotland and was taught to work smarter, not harder.

You’ve heard that saying before, right? Sure, we all have.

Has anyone ever told you to not work so hard? People tell me that all time. Every time someone tells me not to work so hard, I respond with, “I can’t work too hard; I can only work too much.”

You cannot work too hard! It’s impossible. You should put forth maximum effort to do your best with whatever you do. Your mother probably even used to tell you that if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well. She was right!

Working hard does not mean you have to work to death. It also doesn’t mean you can’t work efficiently. I have to consistently remind myself of this.

As I write this, it is early February and I’m in the heart of the accounting “busy” season. Any CPA knows what that means. No, I don’t do taxes but it’s still the busiest time of the year. It means early mornings, late nights and long weekends at clients and the office.

I work really hard this time of year but I actually work this hard year round. The hours may pile up quicker this time of year but I always put forth maximum effort into what I do. My clients deserve that much.

Has your boss ever told you do work on something but say, “Don’t work too hard on it though.” No way! Bosses expect the maximum effort. You should expect that of yourself as well.

Your boss expects the maximum effort. So does your spouse, your kids, your friends. It’s not fun to be around people who are slothful and lazy.

What about efficiency? Efficiency is great but not at the cost of effectiveness. I’d rather work with someone who takes two hours to complete a project for which I will not have to make corrections rather than with someone who takes 30 minutes but it takes me eight hours to fix it.

So, are you going to work your hardest from now on? Try it. See what you accomplish by putting in the effort. You might surprise yourself by what you can accomplish with a little extra focus.

Please leave a comment below and let us know what keeps you from working hard. Do you get distracted by food, TV, music? Do you understand what you’re doing? Are you being challenged? Let us know.
